Running Wishlist

I have been seeing the coolest running products and clothes out there recently, and I just want all of it. Living on a teacher’s salary, paying student loans, and totaling my car (whoops…) have unfortunately limited much spending on my part. But that doesn’t stop me from perusing! Here are some things I’ve had my eye on lately.

PWR Fitted Capri from Reebok

Image

Maybe this is me dreaming of spring, but I would love a pair of running capris. I have a solid pair of leggings that’s been getting me through the winter. (Yes…one pair. They get pretty gnarly by Saturday, let me tell you.) I’ve heard great things about Reebok leggings, and these are on sale!

C9 by Champion Women’s Mesh Fashion Cami Tank from Target

Image

Ah, Target. I could buy everything there, including this tank. I would wear this tank top out! Gotta get workin on those arms for tank top season. (Any good arm workouts for me?)

Nathan Intensity Hydration Vest

I do get thirsty while I run. Last year, I carried my water bottle with me on long runs over 13 miles. I’m back in that territory again for my distance runs, but I just hate holding a water bottle. I’ve seen these vests on other blogs, and I would love to give one a try.

SPIbelt

Image

I carry a lot of stuff with me on my runs. Probably not necessary, but I feel unprepared if I don’t have my cell phone, my keys, some snacks, and my Charlie card for emergency bus or T transit. Most of my clothes don’t have quite enough pockets for all of this. Salt did a great review (and is hosting a giveaway!!) of the SPIbelt, and after reading more, I had to add it to my wishlist.

Randies 3-pack from Oiselle

Image

HOW CUTE ARE THESE UNDIES??? Not that I wear underwear while I run (seriously, who does?) but I would love to have these for fun!

That’s only a taste of the things I wish were filling my closet right now. I did just get a new trusty pair of Asics GT-2000, so I’m optimistic that they’ll help with my foot pain. I’ll let you know after I take ‘em for a spin tomorrow.

What’s on your running wishlist? Have you tried any of these products?

Thinking Out Loud 5

I’m linking up with Amanda for another Thinking Out Loud post today!

Thinking-Out-Loud

Can I be honest? I don’t know if this is my 4th or 5th Thinking Out Loud…and I was too lazy to check. So I figured 5 was better safe than sorry.

I have lots of random thoughts rolling through my brain, so let’s see what happens!

  1. Someone hacked my Pinterest account? Like, whaaaaat?? What a random thing to hack. All they did (as far as I can tell) is add a few weird boards that were easy to delete, and Pinterest totally had my back. They made me change my password TWICE to be safe. Seriously, though. While I love my pins, I can’t imagine anyone else thinking they’re that exciting. Should I be weirdly flattered, or totally creeped out? Hard to tell.
  2. I was at the doctor for 2 hours yesterday, mostly just sitting waiting to get checked in. And I wanted to be mad. I really did. But I always feel like it’s not really anyone’s fault, ya know? Plus, my new doctor was super nice, and it was raining outside anyway, so might as well chill in the waiting room with a book. (Side note: peeing in a cup is HARD. TMI, I’m sure. But seriously, I don’t understand. They don’t randomly drug test you when you run D3 cross country, that’s for sure. Not enough practice, that’s what I’m telling myself).
  3. Any book recommendations for me? I’m always looking for more :) Just finished re-reading Once a Runner, which simultaneously makes me remember why I love to run and also feel like an inadequate failure. There’s a chapter in the book where the main character runs 3 sets of 20 400s. 3 SETS!! WTF. Weird, but awesome. If you’re at all into distance running, you should check it out.

  4. I can’t wait until the end of the month so that I can write another monthly book recap. I’ve read some good ones, friends.
  5. I just went through 6 matches trying to light a candle. Struggle bus.
  6. What is the difference between steel cut oats and regular oatmeal? Besides the fact that it takes way longer to cook steel cut oats? Is it worth branching out, or should I stick to my easy, familiar oats?
  7. Some quotes I’m loving lately:
Don’t let the great be the enemy of the good.
You cannot always have happiness, but you can always give happiness.
Our days are happier when we give a little bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
“You don’t have to be born beautiful to be wildly attractive.” – Diana Vreeland
  8. You should check out The Skimm if you don’t already. It’s a great news service that sends you email updates of important news stories around the world. It’s great for me because I WANT to be informed, but I’m lazier than I care to admit when it comes to actually, you know, being informed. Plus, it’s funny!
  9. I’m on a mega middle school music throwback kick right now. Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, Third Eye Blind. Can’t get enough.
  10. But obviously, that quasi-emo is balanced out by plenty of One Direction, High School Musical, Hunter Hayes, and Jason Mraz. You gotta do what you gotta do, ya know?

What are you thinking lately? Do you struggle with matches, or is that only me? What did you listen to in middle school?

Aches and Pains

I officially feel like I’m in the throes of marathon training. I did my first 16 mile run on Monday (barely…motivation was hard to find this weekend!), and my mid-week runs have been ramping up, too.

And I’m sore. And achy.

It comes with the territory, I know. I ended up doing a harder run today than I should have because I felt like I should replace my easy run with the long run I pushed off on Sunday (flawed logic, I know, but it always SEEMS like it makes more sense to replace the easy run). My quads are feeling it, my always tender shins are a little cranky. But a first for me: the arch on my right foot is sore!

I have never had plantar fascitis before, and I’ve never had any real foot problems save for the giant blister and/or black toenail. (I’ve actually had quite a few nasty blisters. I’m always weirdly proud of them).

But yeah, I’ve never had a sore bottom of my foot before. It’s weird. It doesn’t hurt first thing when I wake up, and according to the world of Google and WebMD, those are the telltale signs of legit plantar fascitis. Something is for sure up, though. My foot is tender during runs and then usually sore after.

I’m icing, which is something I avoid like the plague. I hate it. HATE IT. Especially in the winter! Who wants ice anywhere on their body when it’s snowing outside?? Not me, that’s who.

I really don’t want this to turn into something serious, though, so I’ve been alternating rolling my foot with a tennis ball and icing. And then my sister had the genius idea of putting the tennis ball IN THE FREEZER. Ice and rolling in one! It’s a unique form of torture, but it seems to be helping out.

I’m also thinking about getting new shoes. I broke the cardinal first rule of running and tried a different shoe than my always faithful Asics GT-2000s, and I can’t help but think that’s the main source of the problem. I veered away from my faves because they’re just so pricey, and with my car situation and being an almost-teacher, money is ALWAYS on my mind. But it might be time to bite the bullet and go back to the shoes I know work for me.

Anyway, fingers are crossed that this is a big ol’ nothing. But it never is with running, is it?

What do you do when you have a minor injury? Any advice for me? Favorite shoes?

Nashville Obsessed

First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who commented yesterday on my negative Nancy post. I did get out to do my run, and while it wasn’t one of my best, I was much happier afterwards. Accomplishment just feels way better than guilt, ya know?

On a less heavy note, I’ve been mega-bumming because all of my favorite TV shows are on weird winter/Olympic hiatuses. Don’t get me wrong; I love the Olympics. But I have been missing The Mindy Project, Parenthood, and Parks and Rec something crazy. And Glee, even though I think I’m the only person in the world who still watches it.

Enter Nashville.

I had been intrigued by this show from the first time I saw the commercials a couple of years ago. But it was always on too late for me (10 PM is far past my bedtime), and it wasn’t on Netflix during my Netflix days.

I recently switched to Hulu Plus (mostly so that I could watch the above shows in real-ish time, and because I’m too cheap to pay for 2 $7.99/month TV services), and they emailed me to let me know that Nashville would be available starting from season 1. With Connie Britton (aka Tami Taylor aka who I want to be when I grow up) starring, I figured I had to check it out.

Guys. It’s awesome. Country music, drama, love triangles. Sigh. I haven’t let myself truly binge yet because I have “grown-up” things to do, I guess, but it’s great to sneak in an episode here and there. It also makes those hour long runs on the treadmill go just a lil faster.

And THIS SONG. It’s just the sexiest song I have heard in a while, and I’ve had it on repeat for days. I couldn’t find the actual scene from the show, so this will have to do. Check it out on Spotify, too.

Do you watch Nashville? Any songs you’re loving lately?

Bit of a Rut

I’m feeling like I’m in a bit of a rut.

I had a great week of runs early last week. Got up at 4am and did some solid runs in negative temps. I switched up a couple of runs later in the week, but still stayed on track with my schedule.

And then Sunday rolled around. And I just couldn’t get my butt out the door to do my 16-miler. It was cold, my legs were tired, I was tired, so I convinced myself that a day off would be good. I had Monday off, I reasoned. I would get the long run in just a day late. No big deal.

Yet here it is, almost noon on Monday, and I still haven’t done it. I don’t know what it is. I’m still excited about the marathon. I’m getting into my midweek runs, even with having to get up at absurdly early hours. For some reason, though, this 16 mile run is just messing with my head.

It’s COLD again here. I checked my phone (probably shouldn’t have), and it “felt like” -4 at 8 am this morning. So I ate breakfast, figured i’d head out at 10. Instead, though, my aunt and cousin came over, and I’ve been enjoying just sitting around with my family, eating kind of unhealthy food. Just being lazy.

I don’t know what it is or where this post is going. I know I have to do the run. I’m afraid I’m gonna feel like crap because I slept like crap and didn’t eat great today so far.

I think for me, being home messes with my workout and healthy eating plans. I know those are excuses, and I need to find a way to power past those excuses because I love being with my family, and I love being home. But yeah, for now, it’s just so much easier to run and eat mostly vegetables when I’m on my own, in my own apartment, just doing me.

Hopefully this post will work to get my butt out the door later this afternoon. I’m hoping tomorrow morning that I’ll be able to share my excitement/relief that I got outside for a couple of hours to get through my long run. Maybe it’ll feel great. Maybe it’ll feel terrible, but maybe I’ll feel so much better when it’s done. Who knows.

Any advice for me? What do you do when you’re just not feeling it?

Loving Lately

Happy Friday and Happy Valentine’s Day, friends! I hope your day is a little less icy/slushly/snowy than yesterday, and I hope it’s filled with love, chocolate, and exciting weekend plans.

After 3 days of running at 4 am and one of waking up at 3:30 a nervous wreck because of something going on at school, I am THRILLED that I have one more day before I can catch up on a little sleep.

My hope is to get back to better blogging next week, but in the meantime, here are some things that have caught my attention on the internet lately. Scan them for a quick break at work, or maybe once you get home and you’re cuddled up in your PJs with some tea or hot chocolate. Yum.

Any links I missed? Especially anything running or fitness related, since I clearly slacked on that this week?

Happy Galentine’s Day!

I’m linking up with Amanda for another Thinking Out Loud post.

Image

But this one has a special theme because it is GALENTINE’S DAY!!

What is Galentine’s Day, you ask? First of all, you should set yourself up with Netflix and prepare to binge watch all of Parks and Recreation because it will change your life.

And if you’ve already done that, then you know that Galentine’s Day is Leslie’s way to celebrate all of her gal pals in her life on February 13th, aka a day that can be a tad depressing for some. GALENTINE’S DAY TO THE RESCUE!

In all honesty, there are not enough days dedicated to celebrating our friends. Yes, romantic partners are important, and you can (and should) celebrate any and all types of love on Valentine’s Day. If, however, there’s already a Leslie Knope approved way to add a little extra lovin’ to your week, why not jump on board?

And in that spirit, here are my random thoughts about Galentine’s Day:

  • Buzzfeed nailed it twice. See here and here. (although the 2nd might put you in danger of becoming a little too intoxicated if you’re, you know, working or something)
  • What a great chance to take advantage of the chocolate that is everywhere! Buy a bag and give some to your gal pals…while hoarding a few for yourself, obviously.
  • Get in touch with friends you haven’t talked to in a while. I know it’s hard to keep up with all my gal pals from high school and college now that we’re all in different places, but this is a perfect opportunity to end an emoji field group text or barrage a Facebook message with tons of stickers.
  • Spread the love to the little girls you know in your life! As a teacher, I know I’m psyched to tell my girlies that it’s February 13, aka the day to celebrate friendship and girl power.
  • Girl power is still a cool phrase and should be used more frequently.
  • Call your sister! Call your mom! For me, those are 2 of the most important gals I have in my life, and I want them to feel the extra Galentine’s Day love.
  • If you spread the cheer, the cheer will come back to you. Use today as a chance to be extra happy and loving so that those who are single and maybe a little sad feel brighter. And maybe for your friends in relationships, you can help them destress. Valentine’s Day stressed me out SO MUCH when I had a boyfriend. What is an appropriate Valentine’s Day gift for a guy?? I have yet to figure it out.

But overall, ladies, just tell your gals you love them. Life would not be the same without them. And to you, my small but faithful blogger gal pals, HAPPIEST OF GALENTINE’S DAYS!! I love you all to the moon and back.
